5/21: BCD May meeting early

Benton County Democrats will meet at the Elks Lodge on So. 40th Street (Promenade Blvd) in Rogers on Monday, May 21 at 11:30. This is a change from the usual fourth Monday.

The guest will be Joyce Hale, who will speak about gas drilling and the proposed severance tax for gas wells. An initiated petition, to allow the question to be on the ballot next November, is circulating in the community at this time.

Mrs. Hale lives in Fayetteville and has been an active member of the League of Women Voters of Washington County. While serving in various leadership capacities, her main focus has been a five year study of natural gas development, its environmental impacts, and economics of the industry. She is currently writing a series of articles called “Fracking in Arkansas” for the Fayetteville Free Weekly. She has also been involved in issues of water quality and land preservation through public policy, legislation, and public education.

She and her husband, Jay Hale, are retired from Hale Engineering, a mechanical engineering job shop which they operated in Pea Ridge, Arkansas for over thirty years.

Make reservations for a seat to hear the program, or for a seat and $12 lunch, payable at the door, by calling Georgiana Sterry 876-5843.

Democratic Candidates file for JP – 14th District

The 14th JP district can boast two Democratic  candidates for Quorum Court  gearing up for the May 22nd primary.

Pictured during the filing process is Sean Barnes, a native of NW Arkansas,  now residing in Lowell.   He attended NWACC and University of AR before beginning a career in sales, currently a real estate agent with Crye-Leike Realty,  Fayetteville.  Sean’s focus for the Quorum Court is to “make Benton county a great place to live, work, and play”.   His goals include lowering Benton county’s carbon footprint and focus on making life easier for special needs citizens.

Also a candidate for JP is Bobby Beene, a native Arkansan, originally from Quitman, AR, who has been a resident of Bethel Heights for the past year.  He is a registered EMT with several years experience with ambulance providers in the Conway area.  He has recently returned to the medical field and is currently in RN training.   After about 18 years of prior business experience in restaurant  management, he believes he can utilize that experience toward the benefit of Benton county and as a representative of the 14th district.

Another Democratic candidate is David Ibarra, a Rogers resident who is running for Constable in the 3rd district.  After several years of law enforcement training and three tours of duty in Iraq and Afganistan, he brings appropriate experience to the post.    Pictured with Jimmy Russell,  Vice – Chair of the Benton County Democratic Central Committee, if elected, David will be able to utilize his experience for the benefit of Benton County.

Regular lunch meetings are held the 4th Monday of every month. More...
  • From the Desk of the President…………

We’ve watched as election year politics continues to grow more intense with each passing day. Already in Arkansas, things have begun to heat up as the May 22nd primary election looms. Although very little will change for local Democrats in May, a lot of the Benton county races will be decided and make way for the difficult battle for national and state wide victory in November.

Any BCD members who were unable to attend the March 26th meeting, missed an outstanding opportunity to get acquainted with 9 of the candidates running in the non partisan judicial election which will be decided in May. All voters, county wide, will have an opportunity to vote for a candidate in each judicial category. We are very fortunate to have such a stellar group of candidates wishing to serve Benton county and Arkansas residents.

The political climate changes constantly and quickly. Our BCD program chair and advisory board strives to present the most timely and informative speakers we can obtain. Expect to hear in April, information related to health care laws, potential changes and plans of how AR will fit into this scenario.

There are numerous ballot initiatives competing for a spot on the ballot both at state and county levels that are extremely important and asking for voters to sign petitions to obtain one of three coveted spots on the ballot. Every attempt is being made to bring to you comprehensive information in order to make an informative choice now and again in November. In addition, candidates from our own district will be sharing their information with us. The hope is to also have candidates from other districts in AR speak and share their own plans to hold on to our Democratic majority in Little Rock. Our DPA Chair, Will Bond has also promised a visit later in the year.

There is so much information we need to stay abreast of, it is vitally important that each and every member strive to attend meetings to hear the latest and also to share information you might have with others.

We are excited that, during the past 6 months, we have had a lot of new members join and are now approaching the 200 mark. I encourage you to check the newsletter each month for a list of these new members, introduce yourselves and make them feel welcome. We have hard work ahead and will need all hands on deck, particularly through the summer and early fall.
